Alfred Manessier

1911 - 1993

La grande racine

signed and dated 67; signed with the artist's initials, titled, dated 67 and inscribed A Plasse Lecaisne on the reverse

oil on canvas

63 ¾ by 63 ¾ in. 161.9 by 161.9 cm.

framed: 64 ½ by 64 ½ in. 163.8 by 163.8 cm.

We would like to thank Madame Christine Manessier, the artist’s daughter, for confirming the authenticity of this work. The work is recorded in the artist’s archives and will be included in the forthcoming Alfred Manessier Catalogue Raisonné currently in preparation under Madame Manessier’s direction.

This work is in very good condition overall. There is evidence of minor wear and handling to the edges and corners, with associated abrasions and pinpoint losses as well minor cracking at the pull margins. Under close inspection, there is evidence of stable drying cracks, most noticeably in the black passages. There is a small impact indentation with associated radial cracks and pinpoint losses roughly 18 inches from the left and 8 inches from the top. The canvas undulates slightly in the corners, only visible from certain angles. Under Ultraviolet light inspection, the lower left corner fluoresces darkly and appears to have been restored. Also under Ultraviolet light inspection, scattered areas fluoresce irregularly as a result of the artist’s process but are not the sign of restoration. Framed.
