This Virgin and Child is characteristic of the sculptural production in Antwerp at the end of the 17th and early 18th century. Signed with the initials J.V.B to the side of the throne, this group can be considered as a work by Jan Pieter van Baurscheit the Elder. A scholar of Peter Scheemaeckers (1652-1714), Baurscheit was registered as an architect and sculptor in the Guild of St Lucas in 1694-95, and participated in the decoration of several churches in Antwerp. His hand can be recognised in the virtuoso modelling of the draperies, as well as the expressiveness of his faces in this terracotta.

Par son style et sa composition , cette Vierge à l'Enfant est tout à fait caracteristique de la sculpture anversoise de la fin du XVIIe et du début du XVIIIe siècle. Monogrammée des initiales J.V.B. sur le côté du trône, notre terre cuite peut être considerée comme une oeuvre de Jan Pieter Baurscheit l'Ancien. Elève de Peter Scheemaeckers (1652-1714) en 1691, Baurscheit fut maître sculpteur et architecte dans la guilde de Saint Luc en 1694-1695, et auteur du décor sculptée de plusieures églises anversoises. On reconnaît sa main dans la douceur des visages, et le modelé savant des drapés dans cette terre cuite.
