Marguerite Burnat-Provins
Arras 1872 - 1952 Grasse
Portrait d'homme
23,8 x 20,1 cm ; 9⅜ by 8 in.
We are grateful to Mrs Anne Murray-Robertson for confirming the present attribution on the basis of digital images.
Marguerite Burnat-Provins was only 26 when she painted this portrait. After studying at the Académie Julian in Paris, she settled in Vevey in 1896, along Lake Geneva, with her husband.
Dated 1898, this portrait shows the ability acquired by the artist during this long stay that would last several years, but also the maturity coming out from a sort of disillusionment.
In this delicate combination of both her academic talent and the influence of the masters she studied during her travels, the portrait is still enigmatic: could it represent one of her fourteen brothers and brothers-in-law, a dignitary from her village, or a mountaineer she would have met during a walk?
