the well-hollowed ovoid bottle cleverly carved using the natural inclusions with a figure riding on a donkey, surrounded by a landscape with a pavillon, the reverse with a boy holding a branch of prunus, incised with the characters 'taxue xunmei' ('Searching for prunus in the snow') in regular script (kaishu), the stone of rich honey-brown colour

A similar snuff bottle from the Collection of Mary and George Bloch, is illustrated in Robert Kleiner, Chinese Snuff Bottles in the Collection of Mary and George Bloch, British Museum exhibition, 1995, no. 270, pp. 410-1 where the author explains that the serrated edges to the branches are typical of the Suzhou school.
