A rare yellowish-green jade 'bird of prey' carving
Neolithic period, late Hongshan culture
naturalistically carved grasping a smaller bird or mammal in its beak and clasping a fish in its claws, its head detailed with bulging eyes and its wings feathers rendered with hatched incisions, the reverse pierced with two holes for suspension, the stone of pale yellowish-green colour

Other related bird of prey jade carvings dated to the Hongshan period include two examples in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Teng Shu-ping, Selected Jades in the National Palace Museum, Volume One, ‘The Spirit of Jade, I’, Taipei, 2019, nos. I-056 and I-057, pp. 319-320. It may represent an osprey which is the only bird of prey that would eat both fish and small mammals. It traditionally represents a symbol of marital fidelity.
