The decoration on this vase illustrates the story of the Bai Juyi, the nine scholars of Xiangshan. Two of them are traditionally absent from the group, having not yet reached the venerable age of ninety years old. Compare a brush pot painted in grisaille dating from the Yongzheng reign, from the J.M. Hu collection, illustrated in Selected Ceramics from the collection of Mr. & Mrs. J. M. Hu, Shanghai Museum 1989, no. 50, pp. 84-85.
