Neolithic period, Hongshan culture


the flattened bird carved with a protruding head, bulging eyes and a proud chest, its outstretched wings subtly detailed with grooves and ridges simulating feathers on the interior, the stone of pale celadon colour speckled with white inclusions

A similar jade bird from the collection of Stephen Junkunc, III (d.1978), sold in our New York rooms, 19th march 2019, lot 144. Compare also a bird-form amulet from the Peony collection, illustrated in Angus Forsyth and Brian McElney, Jades from China, The Museum of East Asian Art, Bath, 1994, cat. no. 14, and sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 28-29 November 2019, lot 724.


The importance of the bird motif in the Hongshan culture is discussed in Wu Hung, ‘Bird Motifs in Eastern Yi Art’, Orientations, vol. 16, no. 10, October 1985, pp. 31-41, where he illustrates line drawings of various bird pendants excavated in Liaoning province, figs 4-8. Similar examples have been found at Hongshan sites, such as Hutouhou in Fuxin, Liaoning province or at Balinyouqi in Inner Mongolia, illustrated in Gu Fang, Zhongguo chutu yuqi quanji /The Complete Collection of Jades Unearthed in China., Beijing, 2005, vol. 2, pl. 26.

巫鴻曾撰文討論鳥紋在紅山文化中的重要性,見其著作〈Bird Motifs in Eastern Yi Art〉,《Orientations》,卷16,第10期,1985年10月,頁31-41,作者以線描圖展示遼寧出土各式鳥紋玉飾的設計,圖4-8。 再比數例,遼寧虎頭溝紅山文化時期遺址及內蒙巴林右旗,圖見古方,《中國出土玉器全集》,北京,2005年,卷2,圖版26。
