Property from the Bei Zu collection
A green jade bird pendant
Neolithic period, Hongshan culture
depicted with bulging eyes each side of the protruding beak and flanked by a pair of wide angular wings, its body carved with small triangles simulating the talons, the reverse pierced with an aperture for suspension, the stone of a dark green colour with pale brown inclusions

The importance of the bird motif in the Hongshan culture is discussed in Wu Hung, ‘Bird Motifs in Eastern Yi Art’, Orientations, vol. 16, no. 10, October 1985, pp. 31-41, where he illustrates line drawings of various bird pendants excavated in Liaoning province, figs 4-8. Compare a jade bird figure from the collection of Sir Joseph Hotung illustrated in Jessica Rawson, Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing, The British Museum, London, 1995, no. 1:5.
