Kate Spencer Stewart works by gleaning scraps of visual information, embers which become armatures for her paintings. These compressed forms are executed at a large scale, representing the physical limit of her wingspan. Stewart’s paintings are developed in layers via a process of constant calibration, where flows of atmospheric color fields are continually interrupted. This process shapes and warps space, while the materiality of her pigments appears to negate it. The paintings in turn reverberate like apparitions, transmitting a diffuse energy beyond language.

Kate Spencer Stewart (b. 1984 in Phoenix, AZ) lives and works in Los Angeles. She received her MFA from UCLA and her BFA from Otis College of Art & Design, Los Angeles, and she attended Mountain School of the Arts, also in Los Angeles. Her works have been exhibited at Park View / Paul Soto, Los Angeles; Andrew Kreps Gallery, New York; Bureau Gallery, New York; Maison de Rendez-Vous, Brussels; Misako & Rosen, Tokyo; Piktogram, Warsaw; Redling Fine Art, Los Angeles; Roberts & Tilton, Los Angeles; and 356 Mission Road, Los Angeles, among other venues.
