Themistocles at the Court of Admetus

signed and dated lower right: Coutan. 1819

oil on canvas

unframed: 22.5 x 27.3 cm.; 8 7/8 x 10 7/8 in.

framed: 34.3 x 40 cm.; 13 3/4 x 15 7/8 in.

The canvas has been strip lined, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. Inspectio under ultraviolet light reveals very fine lines of retouching along the margins and in the background, upper right. There is also retouching to a small scratch around the outstretched hand of the figure on the right; there are pinprick retouchings in the flesh tones of the female figure in white, and possibly more concentrated areas of retouching in the flesh tones of the two male figures - but these might also be the fluorescence of the pigments used. In overall good condition.

'Themistocle at the court of Admetus' was the subject of the Prix de Rome in 1819: as narrated by Diodorus and Plutarch, the Athenian general Themistocles fled to the court of Admetus, King of Molossia, after being exiled from his own city. The choice of obscure historical subjects was common at the competition. The present work is a sketch for the final version, now at the Museum of Bourges.1
