Officine Panerai first partnered with the British Gun & Rifle Making house Purdey in 2002 and has since released several different editions of Luminor Sealand watches. This “hunter-style” case, with it’s protective metal cover over the dial that opens on a hinge, is not only thematically appropriate for a collaboration with a gunmaker, but also provides a large canvas for the hand-engraved animal motifs. Each engraving is first outlined in powdered chalk or magnesium powder, and then hand-engraved with a burin – requiring more than a week of work. The present lot features a beautifully engraved lion to the cover. James Purdey & Sons have built, and engraved, sporting guns in London since 1814.
