The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc., New York, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's:
This work is lined with Beva-371 as an adhesive. The painting is accurately retouched and well varnished.
A few areas that fluoresce under ultraviolet light do not appear to correspond to retouching. For example, some of the hair of the central figure and the background directly above her head read very darkly, but there are only small spots of retouching here. There are retouches in the face and the left side of the neck of the female figure on the far left, which address some canvas grain that became more apparent over time. There are small retouches in the back of the music stand and sides of the piano. There are isolated retouches in the dress of the central figure, her neck, the shadowed sides of her nose, and in a few spots beneath her mouth. The girl in the lower right has retouching applied throughout her hair to address some weakness to the paint layer. In the lower right corner, there is a larger area of about 4 inches square which also corresponds to retouching. The background in the upper half of the composition is generally in good condition, except beneath the diagonal line in the upper right, where there is a large restored area of about 10 by 4 inches, which probably corresponds to a consistent area of paint loss.
The work looks well and should be hung in its current state.
