Folio (557 x 364mm.), Dutch text (2L1 misbound but present), engraved allegorical title, 17 double-page engraved maps, modern vellum to style, title in pen to head of spine, red edges, reguarded, map of Peking with small repair to verso, minor browning and creasing
THE FIRST EUROPEAN ATLAS OF CHINA. This was published as the sixth volume of Blaeu's Theatrum. Others were published separately. The maps, after Martino Martini's surveys, display the unique collaboration between the Jesuit Superior of Hangchow, and the Amsterdam cartographer, Joan Blaeu. The resulting atlas of seventeen maps contains a general map of China, fifteen maps of provinces and a separate map of Japan.
