Adèle Romany trained in the studio for female artists directed by the wife of the well-known painter, Jean-Baptiste Regnault (1754-1829). This group conversation piece is typical of Romany's early formal portraiture style, which still shows a great deal of influence from Regnault. A comparable painting of the artist's family, which sold at Christie's, Paris, 26 June 2008, is signed and dated to the year 1804, suggesting a similar date of execution for the present picture.
