Estate of Eberhard Hempel, Dresden (1886 - 1967)

Seated on his throne, an Ottoman dignitary sporting an aigrette, symbol of his rank, receives his messenger, listening with anticipation to the news he has to impart. The fabrics worn by both men - the master's silk kaftan and the messenger's Moroccon hooded shawl, are observed in immaculate detail. Their bearing and dress bring to mind Rudolf Ernst’s and Ludwig Deutsch’s guards.

Pujol favoured Hispano-Moresque interiors which reflect his Spanish background. Here, the interior appears to have been inspired by the Alhambra Palace or the Madinat al-Zahra Palace near Cordoba; or by the 1878 Exposition Universelle in Paris which included elaborate reproductions of the Alhambra Palace.
