TWO ENGINE-TURNED GOLD LOCKETS, ONE SIMON-ACHILLE LÉGER, PARIS, 1815/16-1826, THE OTHER UNMARKED, PROBABLY AMERICAN, DATED 1847


the first in the form of a slender book with engraved spine, the back and sliding front engine-turned within leaf borders, pendent ring and jump ring, the interior with a portrait miniature of Louis XVI painted on ivory, French School, unofficial 3e titre, 4.5cm., 1 ¾ in. high; the second circular with pendent ring, the hinged cover inscribed within an engraved rococo cartouche: ‘Winn. Jany. 29’’ 1847,’ the interior with an engraved inscription and set with a portrait miniature of a young man painted on ivory, presumably John Quarles Winn (1817-1893), American School, 5cm., 2in. diameter

The inscription on the interior of the second reads: ‘Taken 1841 John Q. Winn born October 21 . 1817.’


John Quarles Winn, eldest of the 17 children of John Winn (1789-1844) and his wife, Lucy Barclay (née Wills, 1788-1850) was born at Fluvanna County, Virginia on 21 October 1817. He was married at Richmond, Virginia on 9 August 1847 to Mary Liscome Jarvis (1820-1899) by whom he had 11 children. During the American Civil War, Winn, an accountant, was employed as a clerk and bookkeeper for the Confederate Treasury. He died on 21 July 1893 and was buried at the Bellefontaine Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri. For further details, see the Rev.
