SIR MARK SYKES
LETTER SIGNED, TO LITTLETON ("MY DEAR LITTLETON", CORRECTED FROM "LYTTLETON")
thanking him for assisting his party on "our journey to Cairo", 1 page, 8vo, Shepheard's Hotel Cairo headed stationery, 2 June 1917
Colonel Sir Mark Sykes (1879-1919) was an English politician and diplomatic advisor, best known for his contribution to the infamous Sykes-Picot agreement of 1916, which carved the Middle East into British, French, and Russian spheres of influence. Through his work as a chief political officer assigned to the Egyptian expeditionary forces, Sykes was also a key negotiator in the Balfour Declaration. He died of the Spanish Influenza, caught during the Paris Peace Talks in 1919. Sykes is credited with designing the red, green, black and white flag of the Arab revolt.
