"I AM WRITING A PLAY ABOUT JOAN OF ARC"

Shaw wrote Saint Joan during the middle months of 1923, finally completing its preface in January of the following year. The play was an immense success in New York and London. Arguably his greatest work, Shaw was awarded the Nobel Prize the following year for "for his work which is marked by both idealism and humanity, its stimulating satire often being infused with a singular poetic beauty."

Ben Turner was an author, union leader and Labour MP for Batley and Morley, West Yorkshire.
