Head of the Virgin
limestone, with traces of gilding, on a circa 1940s wood base
head: 19 by 25cm., 7 1/2 by 9 3/4 in.
base: 13 by 28.5cm., 5 by 11 1/4 in.
Overall the condition is good with some wear and dirt consistent with age. The head is a fragment from a larger sculpture. There is a thin layer of plaster to the surface which would have served as a ground for polychromy. This layer survives in particular to the veil, where it has chipped in areas. Elsewhere such as in the face there are remnants of it. There are some traces of gilding in the hair. There are a few small chips and abrasions to the stone, notably to the edges of the veil. There is possible restoration to the tip of the nose. The surface at the proper right shoulder is a little coarse.
Minor general wear to the wood base.
