A Roman Marble Cinerary Urn inscribed for Lucius Versenus Paulinus
1st/2nd Century A.D.
of cylindrical form, carved with strigillations flanking a tabula ansata engraved with three lines of Latin inscriptions reading D(is) M(anibus) / L(uci) Verseni / Paulini ("To the spirits of the Departed of Lucius Versenus Paulinus,") the splayed lid ornamented with overlapping pointed leaves radiating from a baluster finial.
Height with lid 48; without lid 31.5 cm.

Lid: note large chip to edge and chips and abrasions to entire knob's circumference.
Urn: note chip to edge of base in front and small chips and abrasions to top of tabula ansata frame above inscription. Edge of rim also chipped and top of it abraded due to repeated lid friction.
Remains of three ancient iron pins in equidistant mortises along outside edge of rim, with marble loss and rust stains in front of each.
