A Roman Giallo Antico Marble Herm Bust of Dionysos
circa 2nd Century A.D.
with a long beard of wavy voluted curls and mustache, and eyes recessed for inlay, his centrally parted hair bound in a fillet, arranged in a row of spiral curls over the forehead, and falling in twin braids before the ears and in long wavy locks over the shoulders, anathyrosis on the back; no restorations.
Height 22.5 cm.
As shown. Note chips to half of edge of base as well as to tip of nose and proper right nostril. Otherwise entire surface somewhat worn, suggesting light repolishing consistent with 18th/19th c. practices. Two holes on underside for a now missing modern mount.
