PROBABLY FLEMISH, CIRCA 1700 | CHARITY

Along with Prudence, Justice, Faith and Hope, Charity is one of the fundamental Christian virtues. It guides the faithful in their relationships with God and mankind. At the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century, Charity was generally depicted as a Mother feeding her children.

This is the case of this Flemish marble relief made around 1700, illustrating a woman seated in the center of the composition, dressed in an Antique style tunic wrapped in a drapery with deep folds, and surrounded by her four children : as she breastfeeds one infant, she pours milk from a jug for the other two, the fourth child by her side helps himself to fruit from a basket.

La Charité est l'une des vertus chrétiennes fondamentales avec la Prudence, la Justice, la Foi ou encore l’Espérance. Elle guide le fidèle dans ses rapports avec Dieu et les autres hommes. A la fin du XVII^e et au début du XVIII^e siècle, la Charité est généralement représentée sous les traits d’une mère nourrissant ses enfants. C’est ici le cas de ce relief flamand en marbre blanc réalisé vers 1700, qui illustre une femme vêtue et coiffée à l’Antique dans une tunique aux drapés profonds, assise au centre de la composition, entourée de quatre enfants : Tandis qu’elle allaite le nourrisson dans ses bras, elle verse du lait d’une cruche aux deux autres, le quatrième enfant à ses côtés se sert dans un panier de fruits.
