Still largely unknown, the Swiss painter John Dalton has chosen here to paint the remains of a Roman cemetery. The rooftops of the modern town can be seen in the distance, but our gaze is arrested by the scattered ruins emerging from the vegetation. The cracks in the stone catch the light of the cloudy sky, and the luminous quality is enhanced by the way the artist paints the vegetation, in rapid little touches of pale colour.
Dalton immerses us in gentle melancholy, contemplating the ruins of a past grandeur that modern life has abandoned with the passing of the years.

Peintre suisse encore méconnu, Dalton choisit de représenter les vestiges d’un cimetière romain. Alors que les toits de la ville contemporaine se dessinent au loin, notre regard est arrêté par les ruines émergeant çà et là de la végétation. Leurs refends accrochent la lumière d’un ciel nuageux, luminosité d’autant plus vive que le peintre traite la végétation en petites touches rapides de couleurs claires.
Dalton nous plonge ici dans une douce mélancolie, entre ruines d’une grandeur passée et vie contemporaine qui l’aura délaissée au fil du temps.
