Le Chinois is one of Carpeaux’s most famous models which was made for the monumental group of the Quatre parties du Monde and commissioned by the Ville de Paris in 1867 to be placed at the head of the fountain of l’Observatoire by the architect Gabriel Davioud (1824-1881). Following this first execution of the figure, Carpeaux edits two busts which had been used as study figures for the initial monumental group : the first, the figure symbolizing the African continent which becomes Pourquoi naître esclave, and secondly the figure representing Asia which becomes Le Chinois of which we present here a terracotta version. This model is produced by the artist’s atelier as soon as 1872, and then posthumously from 1875.

Le Chinois est l'un des plus célèbres modèles que Carpeaux a réalisé pour le groupe monumental des Quatre parties du Monde, commandé par la Ville de Paris en 1867 afin de couronner la fontaine de l’Observatoire de l’architecte Gabriel Davioud (1824-1881).
Par la suite, Carpeaux édite deux bustes lui ayant servi d’étude pour le groupe : la figure symbolisant le continent africain devient Pourquoi naître esclave, tandis que l’Asie devient Le Chinois dont nous proposons ici une édition en terre cuite. Ce modèle est édité par l’atelier de l’artiste dès 1872, puis de manière posthume par la famille à partir de 1875.
