JAN VAN HAENSBERGEN | THE GALLANT LETTER

The present painting, like the one at the Louvre museum in Paris (Woman feeding a child, inv. 1549), of similar dimensions, was until now attributed to Frans van Mieris. It is actually a painting by Jan van Haensbergen, a pupil of Cornelis van Poelenburgh, mainly known for his Italianate and mythological compositions, but who also worked like the Mieris.

We are grateful to Dr. Eddy Schavemaker who suggested the attribution to the artist on the basis of photographs.

Tout comme le tableau conservé au musée du Louvre, à Paris (Femme allaitant un enfant, inv. 1549), celui que nous présentons, de dimensions similaires, était jusqu’alors attribué à Frans van Mieris. Il s’agit en fait d’une œuvre de Jan van Haensbergen, un élève de Cornelis van Poelenburgh, principalement connu pour ses compositions italianisantes et mythologiques, mais qui exerça également dans la veine des Mieris.
