The relined canvas is perfectly flat. The paint surface is well preserved with plenty of the original thick impasto still intact. An even pattern of craquelure is visible notably in the shadows and darker areas. There is some opaque blooming in the varnish, especially in the lower right-hand corner. Inspection under ultra-violet light shows scattered retouching: there is some strengthening to areas in the sky, along the lower edge and to the breast area of the stone sculpture. Otherwise the main body of the painting with the still life of flowers has virtually no retouching. The reproduction frame is in good condition.

Nicola Cassisa was active in the early 18th century in Campania and Naples and like his master Andrea Belvedere specialized in still lives. The current work is characteristic of his colourful late Baroque compositions, which often combined flowers and animals with architectural elements.
