Son of the famed Jacopo Tintoretto, Domenico trained in his father’s workshop and from the age of 17 has been admitted to the Venetian painters’ guild and was working alongside him on the decoration of the Doge’s Palace. Although he also treated religious and historical subjects, it is as a portrait painter that Domenico is best known. He portrayed members of many of the leading Venetian families such as the Grimani and the Gritti. The sitter of the present portrait has not as yet been unidentified.
