triangular bases engraved with a crest and rising to ram's mask and triangular stems with vase sconces and detachable crested nozzles, stamped with Greek Key ornament and palmettes

A set of four candlesticks of the same design and of the same size, Makepiece & Carter, London 1777 were sold Christies London, The Whitely Trust Fund, 13 June 2000, lot 1, where Robert Adam is suggested as the possible designer 

Writing about another London silversmith, John Carter II, Arthur Grimwade wrote "his mark is found overstruck on that of candlesticks bearing the early Sheffield hallmarks, presumably purchased by him to resell at a profit to meet the growing demand for stamped and filled examples in London" (revised ed., p. 459).
