A Silesian engraved armorial goblet and cover

First quarter of the 18th century, Hermsdorf


attributed to the workshop of Friedrich Winter or a close follower, cut in Hochschnitt and Tiefschnitt, the thistle-shaped bowl cut with tapering rectangular panels engraved with a bishop's coat-of-arms, an equestrian vignette among birds, flowers and scrolling foliage below a fountain in a formal garden and a pastoral scene of a shepherd and flock among arabesques in the manner of Jean Bérain, divided by vertical strapwork sections, the lower part of the bowl cut with lenses and facets, the domed cover with scroll cartouches surrounding a cut bud finial, supported by a cut baluster stem above a cut conical foot engraved with flowers, black enamel inventory numbers `44` to underside of foot and cover

An armorial marriage goblet attributed to Friedrich Winter with similar strapwork to the present example is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, museum no C.2&A-1961. For a golbet of similar form and with raised strapwork panels see Klesse, B. & Mayr, H., European Glass from 1500-1800 The Ernesto Wolf Collection, Vienna, 1987, no. 106, where the authors discuss this class of goblet, listing comparable examples and citing Robert Schmidt who attributes the golasses to a group produced in about 1720 in the Hirschberger Tal.
