The coat-of arms on the cover is that of van Welderen, for Maria van Welderen (née Soudenbalch) whose initials are also inside the cover. Maria married Johan van Welderen Burggraaf van Nijmegen, Lord of Valburg (1632-96) in 1659. The family were governors and administrators in their locality around Nijmegen. The son of Johan and Maria, also called Johan was alderman and burgomeister of the town of Tiel and represented the nobility of Nijmegen at the States General of the United Provinces, at the Hague. A very find pair of silver sugar castors with the coat of arms of this latter Johan and is wife D'Odillia-Louisa van Steelandt were made by Elie Pacot in Lille (sold Christies Paris, 17th December 2009, lot 47). They reflect the style prevalent at court,  in the Hague at the time, which influenced the English silver of Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1694-1773) ambassador to the States General in 1727

Unlike the present example, serpentine tankards with silver mounts are normally unmarked and therefore anonymously made.
