A Deruta maiolica gold-lustre small portrait dish
Circa 1535-40
painted in blue and lustre with a portrait of warrior, bust length, wearing a helmet and armour, a lily-like flowers to the side, within a scale-patterned well and concentric circles, the broad rim with a border of paired leaves and trefoil flowerheads below arches and buds, the underside covered in a grey tinted tin glaze

The present plate, identified by a previous owner according to the attached paper label as Gubbio is an unusual example of Deruta lustre ware. Deruta is noted for golden coloured lustre whereas Gubbio, and in particular the workshop of Maestro Giorgio Andreoli, is noted for ruby-coloured and copper-coloured lustres. Both are inspired by Hispano-Moresque lustrewares of Malaga, Valencia and other regions of Spain which were highly prized. The Deruta potters were particularly noted for their large and boldly decorated chargers with female portraits, commonly known as `Bella Donna` dishes. The present plate is unusually small compared to these pieces and is glazed to the back of a dish, another uncommon feature.
