A Louis XVI brass mounted fruitwood and marquetry bureau plat, late 18th century
the red leather writing surface on top of two short drawers to the front, raised on four tapering feet, on sabots and castors

The present bureau plat relates closely to the oeuvre of highly skilled marqueteurs and ébénistes such as André-Louis Gilbert and Christophe Wolff. The marquetry depicting landscapes are similar to those found on a bureau à cylindre attributed to Gilbert offered at Sotheby's New York, 23 October 2004, lot 95 and on a bureau plat by Gilbert illustrated in Pierre Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français au XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 1998, p. 402. Interestingly, one of his commodes feature a chute with triangle-shaped mounts, sold at Christie's New York, 26 October 2001, lot 414.
