A Flemish classical narrative tapestry, possibly from the Story of David, Brussels, first quarter 16th century
Distinguished Property from Osterrieth House in Antwerp
A Flemish classical narrative tapestry, possibly from the Story of David, Brussels,
first quarter 16th century
Woven with kneeling figure of Abigail before David, asking for her husband to be forgiven and not punished, David shown relaxing in his luxuriously decorated bed chamber, with onlooking male and female figure, the background with landscape and architectural details, shows further small groupings, possibly with David shown later asking Abigail to marry him, on the death of her husband (I Sam. 25); reduced in size
Overall measurements: 373cm across the top, 369cm across the bottom, 280cm along left side, 278cm along right side.
Reduced in size. Lacking outer borders. Balanced colour and composition overall. Some repair to the dark outlines of definition, commensurate with age, as dark line has been placed to create definition and to replace oxidised browns. There are areas of reweaving, visible in lines that are both vertical and horizontal, in the left hand side section of the tapestry, visible as a different colour. They do not detract from the overall appearance. Beautiful weaving and detail, colour and composition.
