Iris Bernblum’s conceptual works examine human nature through the dual lenses of power and vulnerability, focusing primarily on the way society frames identity in regard to gender, sexuality, shame, and desire. She is invested in both visual and performance-based work, engaging the latter as both voyeur and actor. Bernblum’s process relies on carrying a kind of psychoanalytic trust, a free associative freedom which removes her from the position of censoring her own work.
Recent solo exhibitions of Bernblum’s work include those at Mana Contemporary, Jersey City; Spertus Institute, Chicago; and Chicago Artists’ Coalition, Chicago. Her work has been included in exhibitions at Carroll Street Studios, Chicago; Aspect/Ratio, Chicago; and the Elizabeth Foundation, New York.
Please note that while this auction is hosted on Sothebys.com, it is being administered by the Art Institute of Chicago’s Society for Contemporary Art (the “SCA”), and all post-sale matters (inclusive of invoicing and property pickup/shipment) will be handled by the SCA.
