The sheet has been laid down on canvas. There are several dents to the canvas with associated tears to the paper: to the background to the left and right of the head; in the lapel; to the background in the lower left; in the breeches of the sitter; two to the right of the breeches (one with paper loss through which the underlying canvas is visible); and elsewhere. There is a surface scratch with loss to the paper to the calf, and further surface scratches and abrasions throughout. Pin holes are visible in the upper right corner. Painted paper tape which shows some minor losses is covering the left of the bottom edge. There is media staining throughout, notably to the background to the right of the sitter's breeches, paint drips in the upper left, as well as a general layer of surface dirt. Foxing is visible in the areas of unpainted paper, such as the hands. Inspection under UV light reveals an uneven varnish layer with no obvious signs of retouching. Framed. Unexamined out of frame.
