Acquired at the above sale by the present owners

Petrushka was Stravinsky's second ballet for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes and tells the story of three puppets brought to life by a showman. The premiere of the original production took place at the Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris, on 13 June 1911, with Vaslav Nijinsky dancing the part of Petrushka.

Alexander Benois designed the sets and costumes for the 1911 production, as well as for a number of later productions. The present lot is a design for the costume worn by Richard Farley who danced the role of the Crow at Covent Garden in the 1957.
