a group of 6 photographs, comprising Chicago 9 and Chicago 56, each signed in pencil on the reverse; Chicago 23 and Chicago 104, each titled and dated on the reverse; Chicago 7, with numeral notations in pencil on the reverse; and Chicago 29, mounted, signed, titled, and dated in ink on the reverse, 1948-60, variously printed (6)

These prints, on paper with a slight surface sheen, are in generally excellent condition. The following is visible on some of the prints: deposits of retouching, minor handling creases and impressions, bumped margin corners, and very subtle silvering. There is insignificant soiling on the reverse. Additional numerical annotations in an unidentified hand in pencil the prints are as follows:

When examined under ultraviolet light, these prints appear to fluoresce.

The Aaron Siskind photographs offered in Lots 128 and 129 come from the collection of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Since 1936, when the Museum received an early gift of 160 Frances Benjamin Johnston photographs, the VMFA has strategically built a collection that reflects the full history of the medium, with artists such as Sally Mann, Louis Draper, Gordon Parks, Emmet Gowin, and André Kertész well-represented. This

dynamic collection grew significantly in January 2020 when it received an unprecedented gift of more than 8,000 Aaron Siskind photographs from the Aaron Siskind Foundation, New York. The photographs offered here represent duplicates within the VMFA collection and have been selected for deaccession to support the Siskind Prize, an annual fellowship grant for artists working in photography and photo-based art.
