LANDSCAPE WITH HORSEMAN AND CLASSICAL RUINS BEYOND

oil on canvas

canvas: 19 by 15 in.; 48.3 by 38.1 cm.

framed: 24¼ by 20¼ in.; 61.6 by 51.4 cm.

The canvas is lined and stable on its stretcher. There is a faint undulation to the canvas surface near the upper edge. The painting has not been attended to recently, and some thinness is visible in the figures in the lower left, as well as in the browns at lower right and along the right edge. A craquelure pattern is visible throughout, though more pronounced in the lighter tones of the sky. Inspection under UV reveals scattered retouching at the extreme edges, as well as a spot of retouching in the lower left corner, in the lower right corner, in the hill near the center of the left edge, and in the stairs near center. There are small and scattered spots of retouching in the sky. Offered in a carved giltwood frame.
