Description

AFTER CRISTOFANO ALLORI

JUDITH WITH THE SEVERED HEAD OF HOLOFERNES

oil on panel laid down on panel

panel: 13⅝ by 11 in.; 5.36 by 4.33 cm.

framed: 19½ by 16¾ in.; 41.9 by 42.5 cm.

Condition report

The panel consists of a single board that is stabilized with two horizontal battens on the reverse. All four edges are beveled. Painting presents a powerful image that reads well with some minor details in the shadows that have sunken. Three thin scratches of about 2 inches each that are faintly visible are on the top left quadrant. Inspection under UV shows an uneven varnish, with scattered small spots of retouches to Holofenes beard, Judith's cheek, and in the background. Painting is offered framed.

Catalogue note

This painting is a 19th century copy after Cristofano Allori's original canvas in the Buckingham Palace, London.1 This became one of Allori’s best-known compositions, as the existence of numerous versions of the subject by the artist and his workshop attests.
