The canvas has been re-lined, probably circa 100 years ago. Cusping is evident on all edges suggesting the painting has not been trimmed or reduced in size. The paint surface appears to be secure and stable but has been slightly flattened by the re-lining. The paint surface is a little abraded particularly in the background and on the lower right torso and right arm of Christ, as the viewer sees him. The painting displays a fair amount of later retouching. This is readily visible to the naked eye as these retouching - which principally affect the figure of Christ - are now much lighter in tone than the surrounding flesh colour. These are also clearly evident under ultraviolet light inspection, as is strengthening to the dark areas beneath and around Christ's arms.

The appearance of the painting would be significantly improved by the removal of these old, discoloured retouchings and subsequent restoration. Overall in fairly good condition. Held in a later, plaster and gilt wood frame.
