where acquired by Dr Erika Polh-Ströher (1919-2016)
This self-portrait is datable on stylistic grounds to circa 1800-8. It relates to two other portrait drawings by Cosway: a portrait of King George III and a portrait of his son, and Cosway’s great patron The Prince of Wales. Both of these works are held in private collections.1
This drawing formed part of the collection of Dr Pohl-Ströher. For more information on this collector please see lot 244.
