where acquired by Dr Erika Polh-Ströher (1919-2016)
Along with Richard Cosway and George Engleheart, John Smart is considered by many to be the greatest English portrait miniature painter of the eighteenth century.
Smart drew this rare self-portrait in Madras, India, where he lived between 1788 and 1797. Self-portraits on ivory by Smart are held in the collections of the Victorian and Albert Museum (P.11-1940) and the Cleveland Museum of Art, U.S.A. (1952-95).
