An old label, written in an unknown hand, is attached to the reverse of the frame. It gives some clue as to the identity of the sitter and reads: Mr. Bronner depin[?] de Casimir Karpff de / Colmar.- / Mr. Bronner ainsi que Casimer Karpfetainent les amis d'efance de mon père. / Hanover le 21 [?] Mars 1869[?]. For a portrait of the same sitter on ivory please see lot 252.
