Francesco Sabatelli was the son of the Milanese painter, Luigi Sabatelli, and started his artistic career under the direction of his father. He later became a professor at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. When Luigi Sabatelli was commissioned to work on the Salone dell' Iliade in the Palazzo Pitti, Francesco assisted him with the decorations and caught the attention of Leopoldo de' Medici who, so impressed with Francesco's work, provided funding for the young artist to pursue his studies in Venice and Rome.
