The canvas is lined, the paint surface is relatively clean, and the varnish is clear and even. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals careful retouchings that are nevertheless slightly visible to the naked eye - in the network of craquelure, in the mother’s face, chest, breast, wrists and in parts of her drapery. There are also small retouchings in the face of each child and scattered in the background, most notably to an area of bituminisation in the landscape either side of the child on the right, and in the top of the red drapery upper centre. The painting presents well and is ready to hang.
