The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:
Adriaen Jansz. Van Ostade
The Dutch Fates
Oil on oval panel, in a gilt wood frame with some losses.
The oak panel support is in a good preserved state: it is flat without any distortions.
The paint layer is stable and secure and in a good original condition.
Fine details to the faces and tonal nuance is well preserved, and the paint texture, particularly to the highlights and more thickly applied painted areas, is in excellent original condition.
Some minor flaked loss has occurred horizontally down the grain in an area of the background above the standing figure, and down through her left shoulder.
The area between the three Fates has wood grain that is a little more raised than in other areas, this, along with a paint layer that has been thinly applied, has given rise to slight thinness here.
Chromatic integrity is maintained and tonal subtleties, especially to the drapery is preserved.
No tonal benefit would be gained from removal of the varnish.
