oil on canvas

unframed: 94 x 152.4 cm.; 37 x 60 in.

framed: 140.5 x 163 cm.; 41 1/4 x 94 in.

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is clean, and the varnish is clear and even. Inspection under ultraviolet light appears to reveal broad areas of wash retouching in the sky, notably upper left, and in the clouds which runs diagonally from the upper right corner to the centre of the sky. There is also a small area of retouching in the clouds upper left 2 x 2 cm., and an area in the centre of the left margin 5 x 7 cm. Small retouchings are found along the margins, most notably lower left and in the centre of the lower margin, and there are small areas of strengthening to the blacks in the gondolas and figures in the centre. The painting presents well and is ready to hang in its current state.
