The canvas is lined, the paint surface is clean, and the varnish is clear and even. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals minor, scattered pin-prick retouchings in the sky with some more concentrated areas of retouching along the margins. There are very few retouchings to the lower half of the picture, with 2 areas of restoration in the water lower left consisting of fine lines to the network of craquelure. The majority of the painting is untouched and is in overall very good condition.

Numerous copies of this composition exist, which follow the design of Canaletto's original, today in Sir John Soane's Museum, London (inv. no. P66),1 datable to 1734-35 and known to have been finished before 1736, as it has been identified as the painting purchased from Canaletto by Marshal Johann Matthias Schulenburg (1661-1747) in February 1736 for 100 zecchini. That work was in England by 1795 and in the collection of William Beckford (1759-1844), at Fonthill, before Sir John Soane purchased it in 1807.
