The flat, stable panel is supported on the reverse by a stretcher. The paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish is clear and even, with a handful of very minor surface scuff marks. The upper section of the fruit and pewter platter appear to have been left uncleaned. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals some retouching to the panel: pinprick spots sparsely scattered in the flesh tones of all three figures, with a more concentrated spot in the Christ's forehead; fine lines in Christ's drapery, over his proper right thigh; broader areas in the shoulder, arm and back of Saint Joseph; some small spots scattered along the ledge; and some fine vertical lines and pinpricks in the sky. The painting is in overall good condition and presents well in its current state.
