Kronach 1472 - 1553 Weimar

Portrait of Johann Friedrich the Magnanimous, Elector of Saxony (1503-54)

signed with the artist's device of a serpent (with raised wings), centre left, and dated: 1526

oil on beechwood panel, unframed

unframed: 56 x 39 cm.; 22 x 15 3/8 in.

The panel is cradled, flat and stable. Two restored, horizontal splits run the width of the panel just above and below centre which are visible to the naked eye. The paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is clear and even. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a rather opaque varnish, beneath which there appears to be very little intervention, save for a spot in the sitter's chin, and a handful of other minor spot retouchings. The aforementioned splits have fine lines of retouching, and there also appears to be some older retouching around all four margins. The panel presents fairly well in its current state.
